What Goes Into Moving Costs? (And How to Plan Your Budget)

We get it: when you’re planning a move, you want everything to go smoothly and stay within budget. But if you’ve ever tried to get a moving quote, you’ve probably noticed... prices can vary a lot.

So what actually goes into the cost of hiring movers?

Let’s break it down so you know exactly what to expect — no surprises, no stress.

1. Size of Your Move

First things first: how much stuff are we moving?

The more furniture, boxes, and (ahem) "miscellaneous treasures" you have, the longer it’ll take and the bigger the truck you’ll need.

At Ward Brothers, we ask a few quick questions about your home size, number of rooms, furniture items, and any specialty items (like a piano or that 300-pound dresser your aunt gave you) to give you a fair and accurate estimate.

2. Distance Between Locations

If you're just moving across town, your travel fee might be pretty small.

If you're heading a bit further — like from Overland Park to North Kansas City — expect quite a bit of travel time.

Pro tip: Always ask about travel fees up front!

3. Time and Labor

Most moving companies (including us) charge based on the number of movers and the time it takes to complete your move.

At Ward Brothers, for example:

  • Loading Help – $360 for 3 hours

  • Unloading Help – $240 for 2 hours

  • Extra Hours – $120/hour if you need more time

If your move is simple and straightforward, you might only need the minimum time.

Bigger moves or moves with lots of stairs, tricky parking, or heavy items might take a little longer — and that’s totally normal.

4. Specialty Services

📦Need same-day moving help?

📦Got fragile items that need special handling?

📦Requesting packing services in addition to loading?

These extra services can add to the cost — but they can also majorly lower your stress level. (Sometimes it’s worth it for peace of mind alone.)

Ward Brothers, for example, offers Same-Day Moving starting at $650 for 4 hours if you’re in a pinch and need help fast.

5. Supplies and Equipment

Some moves need more than just muscle: dollies, furniture pads, shrink wrap, tie-down straps, and more.

We bring all the essentials to protect your stuff — at no extra charge. (Because nobody wants their favorite couch arriving with a mystery rip.)

Always ask your movers what's included, so you're not scrambling to buy last-minute supplies on moving day!
